REALLY big hair

button down cotton shirts, short sleeves rolled up, collar standing up, extra points for brightly colored random graphic print. even better if you had the asymetrical hairstyle where your hair swooped up over one eye and down the other, before settling into the precursor to the mullet-the bi-level haircut.

i graduated cosmetology school in time to experience the height of the mullet. i became an expert at the mullet. at that time it was known as the Bi-Level.

i did a few mullets, i admit it. but back then, it was cool.
then i stopped, and resolved never to repeat the mullet.
then i had someone who requested it. a young college student, a surfer dude.
i'm struggling with my vow to never re-create the mullet. yet, it's been requested, and by people willing to pay me 4 times what they paid for the same haircut 18 years ago. ah, the irony of fashion....

oh, i forgot the big bushy eyebrows. as big an identifier of '80's fashion as the asymetrical hairstyle or the big frizzy hair.

fashion is indeed horrible. i usually take about 10 times as long to feel good with a new fashion, by which time it's of course out of fashion. this somewhat caters to my rebel genes, i can safely feel independent while eventually catching up with the world.
big hair (and big hair bands) is indeed evil. i think it's one of the more horrible aspects of the dreaded-decade-which-i-will-not-mention and i can only hope to never experience that trend again. as for eyebrows... it's a family feature for me, they're large-ish and bushy and there's not much i can (or am willing) to do about it. blame it on genetics :)

oh i forgot to say in my other post. if they're willing to pay and especially if they're doing it in a tongue in cheek, self-aware kinda way then it's their own problem. let them have their mullets and begone. just dont take any reponsibility for them getting beat up over it.

A real reason to hate the 80s...Reaganomics!
And Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda work-out tapes. I lived in the Midwest during the "Satanic Panic" of the mid-1980s...was there anything like that out here? It was just awful being a teenager to begin with...without having my (overly paranoid-ultra conservative Christian) father sneaking into my room and looking for Satan in my books, Satan in my cassette collection, Satan in my underwear drawer, etc. I don't think that he knew that satan lived in the basement of my Irish Catholic grandmothers' house!

My #1 Reason to Hate the 80s is also the the #1 reason to love the 80s - MTV. A great idea turned horribly bad. Mass marketing at it's finest. Youth culture on a stick.

The story goes, like this. Columbia Records was getting ready to release Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and MTV had proven it was the new catalyst for maximum exposure. When MTV executives said no, because we are a "rock" station, Columbia pulled out their trump card. They threatened to pull all their artists' videos and all their subsidiaries and affiliates as well. The numbers amounted to some 80% of the videos MTV had in regular rotation.

Overnight, MTV became the bitch of Madonna, Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Hall and Oats, Huey Lewis and the News, and later on hair, upon hair, upon hair bands.

First video ever seen on MTV - Asia's "Heat of the Moment." Worst guitar solo ever by Steve Howe.

I will admit to one perculiar fashion nono I had during the 80s. I was styling in my grey pleaded pants with high top boots, an green wool army jacket that came to the waste, florescent colored multi-colored shirt with speckles, and the cherry on top - a red barret with black tascles. Yeah baby. A look that will last forever.

My family did not have cable then so I was over a friend's house when I saw "Heat of the Moment". Unfortunately, MTV was still beign scrambled so we watched it that way. Maybe I am wrong, because I remember also seeing "We're the Kids in America" and "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics at the same time, unscrambled. Maybe my brain is scrambled.

Worst car I ever owned? Chevy Citation. Truly the Ford Pinto of the 80s, along with the Bronco II SUV which I never owned.

Blame the asymetrical haircut's rocket ride to popularity on "Purple Rain" ("Dig if you will a picture/ Of you and i engaged in a kiss - AAOOOHAAH!) oH NO, IT'S ALL COMING BACK!! Wait . . . I had a blast in the 80's! So much carefree, guilt-free sex - WITHOUT CONDOMS!!!! And cocaine wasn't addictive, and crack didn't show up until near the end of the decade. Quaaludes, and 50-cent tequila shots on wednesday nights at Coconut Teaser on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Oh yeah, did I mention the sex? Clothes were cheap because the best ones were used. I LOVED THE 80'S!!!
